Both women's and men's Warhawk Tennis teams had great weekends of tennis this past weekend. The women hosted a pair of D1 programs at Lake Geneva Tennis on Saturday and the men traveled to Crawfordsville, IN to take on regional foe Wabash College. At D1, the format is a bit different. All matches use no-ad scoring, doubles is just a normal set to 6, and it's a 7 point match (instead of 9), meaning doubles is just worth one point. The team that wins a majority of the doubles matches earns the doubles point. The women started out facing University of Northern Iowa. At #3 doubles Paige Nierman/Molly Rueth ran out to 3-0 and 4-1 leads and never looked back taking the match 6-3! We fell at 1D (Kitchell/Martin) and 2D (Palavra/Minkov), so we were down 0-1 heading into singles. The highlights of the singles included Paige Nierman and Julie Martin each forcing overtime in a set, but lost 5-7 eventually, and Elsie Ha fought back dominating her second set 6-1 and had a match point in her tiebreak before falling 11-9 in the breaker. In the second match against UW-Milwaukee the Hawks started off strong holding steady at 3-3, 3-4 and 2-3 early in the doubles competition, but then the Panthers took charge and won each of the three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead heading into singles. The singles highlights were Kitchell playing a great first set against a very good player at the top of the lineup and Sabrina Palavra getting the job done at 4S converting in two close sets for a straight sets win. But that was the lone point for the Hawks as we fell 6-1 overall. The excitement of the day, however was in a #7 exhibition singles match with Olivia Kraft taking on Loren Nelson a starter from last year's Panther team and she gave her everything she had, falling in a thrilling 7-6, 7-6 affair. What made it so exciting was not only the quality of play, but that every player from both teams were cheering like crazy during this last match on court. This was a great experience for our freshman! To see the story and the box scores for all the matches go to: UWW Women vs UNI and UWM The men were in Indiana on Sunday facing the Little Giants of Wabash College a team that has been providing close matches for the Warhawks the past couple years. This year, the Hawks were able to win it 6-3 without injured Captain Brandon Dechter. The hawks were looking good 30 minutes into the match with #3 doubles (Rider/Guillermo) about to close out their 8-2 win and up at break at #1(Engelhart/Gray) and #2(Wood/Mitchell). But Wabash had timely breaks to send each of those matches to tiebreaks where the Hawks fell short at both spots 8-7. So we were down 1-2 heading into singles. With only three courts at their facility we put on Jimmy, Ryan, and Alex our 1,2,3 singles positions. Mitchell and Gray tore it up only losing 7 games between the two of them at 2S and 3S giving us a 3-2 lead and Engelhart was up a set and a break. We put on Pietila and Guillermo at the 4S and 5S spots on the two open courts and Pietila lit it up for a 6-3, 6-1 win at 4. Jimmy's match at 1S went to a full third and did not finish before Brendan made it 4-2. Wabash's top player ended up getting hot taking out Jimmy at 1S 7-5 in the third set to make it 4-3. Wood then was on and off quickly at the 6 line winning 6-1, 6-0 before Guillermo escaped with a 6-2 third set victory for the 6-3 overall score. It was a fun trip and some great team bonding!
